The Kensington Food Forest
The Kensington Food Forest is located in Wurundjeri Country, in Naarm/Melbourne, so called Australia. It is a community-led space for growing food, sharing knowledge, and cultivating connections, located in the interstitial green spaces of the Kensington Public Housing estates, on Derby Street since 2017.
It is a living experiment in regenerative urban agriculture, demonstrating how cities can support biodiversity, food security, and waste reduction. Rooted in principles of circularity, it functions as part of a broader network that includes the Urban Farm Collective, the Fresh Food Market (every first Saturday of the month at Skinny Park), and the Compost Network.
These interconnected initiatives are reshaping what a local circular economy can be—prioritising redistribution and relocalisation before waste even becomes an issue.
Seeing the Forest Through the Trees: Community Indicators for Regenerative Circularity.
This is a collaborative project between KCEPCG and APR that dives deep into the often-overlooked impact of grassroots initiatives, showcasing the Food Forest as a space that nurtures community driven values like biodiversity, social equity, and community well-being.
By co-creating 10 indicators with the local community, the research captures less visible narratives that transcend traditional metrics, revealing the complexities of and opportunities for building a regenerative circular economy.
The Kensington Food Forest stands as a testament to what can be achieved when diverse communities come together to regenerate both land and social fabrics.
The Alliance for Praxis Research
APR is a collective of young researchers and artists nurturing spaces and encounters for social change and knowledge sharing. We work collectively, independently, and freely.
The idea of praxis - the indissociable and continuous becoming of critical thought and action - is what brought us together. We seek to do more than understand, but to act, intervene, subvert, challenge, and assemble new, alternative, and better futures.
KCEPCG
KCEPCG is a community collaboration of residents of Kensington, Transition Town Kensington, Urban Farm Collective, Kensington Neighbourhood House, Kensington Town Hall Compost Hub, Unison, plus supporters The Venny, Kensington Community High School, and Kensington Community Children’s Co-operative.
